Today we are going to talk about the Parable of the Hired Labourers. I was recently at a bible study at a local church when the pastor decided to talk about this parable. This particular one wasn't understood by anyone there--save a few people. I wanted to talk to everyone about it, but she quickly skipped past without explaining the meaning. I was disappointed. Yes, I already knew the meaning. The reason why I decided to go to the bible study in the first place was to see where this area was in their walk with Christ.
I was sorely disappointed in the lesson. I believe that everyone needs to know and understand what Jesus is talking about. We are to prepare ourselves for His coming.
The parable can be found in Matthew 20. (Stated below KJV (King James Version))
Matthew 20: 1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is in an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
So, what does this mean? Jesus talks a lot in The New Testament about how he is THE WAY, THE TRUTH and THE LIFE and the only way to THE FATHER is through him. So... He is the owner of the vineyard. He decides the wage... He said (in this parable) that it was a penny for a day's work. The workers (or people that want heaven in this parable) all agreed that they would work for the wage promised by the owner of the vineyard. So, no matter when people decide to follow God and learn the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE, they are welcomed by the Father... You could be a follower of Christ five minutes before He comes back to get us, and it is okay. He is telling you that as long as you come to him, that he will give you what he has promised. He gets to decide what the prize (pay) is, he gets to decide when and how and where and who. Many people are called to do the work, but FEW are chosen... People don't like the way he does things... too bad. His rules. The way to heaven is narrow because few CHOOSE to do the work. Few CHOOSE to Turn away from their sinful ways. The people in the vineyard were promised the penny for a day. They didn't like what the boss of the vineyard did with his money. He did what he said he would do but they wanted more. He didn't do anything wrong... PEOPLE WANT THINGS THEIR WAY... But... God has the better viewpoint. He knows all from the beginning all the way to the end.
Why do we still try to fight God on His way of doing things? Why do we think we know better than HE does on who deserves salvation and who doesn't? This is why He said to LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF. If we did this, then we wouldn't complain about what God wants to hand out and what he doesn't. IF we LOVED THE LORD GOD WITH ALL OF OUR HEART, SOUL AND MIND, we wouldn't be doing evil.
So, keep your "eye" single. Don't focus on the bad, but see the good (GOD) in everything. The way to hell is wide... meaning it is so easy to go there... There are so many obstacles, distractions and fun and shiny things to take us off track, but the way to The Most High is narrow... we actually have to work at not being distracted, but focused on the GOOD... on GOD.
May God Bless You and Keep you! Keep safe and have an amazing Thanksgiving, giving The Most High God all of the praise and grace He deserves.
